The Beautification Committee of the PLA oversees the work of the Mean Green Team, Graffiti Cleanup, Utility Box Art and many of the large public projects such as those on the medians of Nimitz Parkway. The Beautification budget is one of the largest components of our PLA expenditures, including contracting with professionals to trim trees, plant and maintain large project areas and provide water to planted areas without available irrigation systems.
For many years the committee has been chaired by Ron Brooks, a well-known retired teacher and active member of the Mean Green Team. The committee is fortunate to have as members three Master Gardeners and a host of dedicated and tireless community volunteers.
Committee members interface with City and County officials, collaborate with City Parks and Recreation workers and local law enforcement officers. They monitor areas of the community that may require the efforts of the Mean Green Team. In recent years the Beautification Committee has worked with City officials to deal with issues of Homelessness, including the large accumulations of debris that may develop in public areas.
We evaluate the locations of utility boxes that may benefit from an art project and respond immediately to any reports of graffiti. When necessary, committee members personally scrub or paint out graffiti. This significantly reduces the tendency for such vandalism to escalate rapidly and contribute to higher crime rates in the neighborhood.
Committee members participate in all phases of project planning, permitting, contracting, landscaping and long-term followup. The PLA is recognized by City and County officials for the work accomplished in the community and has been fortunate to receive public grants to assist in funding this work.
