For over a century, submarines have been coming to San Diego to conduct training with the Fleet in Southern California waters. The main mission of the squadron is to prepare submarines to deploy in support of national defense. Many submarine deployments last several months at a time, quite a sacrifice from our service men and women on our behalf.
In conjunction with the Point Loma Optimists, the Point Loma Association, in June 2013, initiated the “Welcome Home Squadron 11 Submariners” program. It is a highly visible banner program used by our local business owners to display support for our Squadron 11 submariners on return to Navy Base Point Loma. We currently have five submarines regularly stationed in San Diego at NBPL. Submarine arrival schedules vary but take place about 3-4 times/year and the banners are displayed for about 2 weeks during the arrival.
Through the PLA, businesses volunteer to buy semi- personalized, standard sized 36”x120” vinyl banners that welcome our Squadron 11. The banners sport a business logo at one end and an American Flag at the opposite end. No telephone numbers or websites are allowed on the banners. The banner owners are contacted via e-mail by a Point Loma Association volunteer a couple of weeks prior to the submarine arrival with a tentative date for arrival. Banners are hung by the business owners, however there is some assistance available for special situations.
Banners with tax cost approximately $135 and may be ordered through Al Campbell at Sign Diego on 2744 Midway Dr. (1-619-225-8230). Please contact Cecilia Carrick at email@example.com or Sarah Cooley at firstname.lastname@example.org to participate in the program.
