FAQ

Q. What is the Point Loma Association (PLA)?

A. The PLA is a 501 c4 non profit group, founded over 60 years ago, whose mission is to improve and beautify our Peninsula community for the benefit of all.

Q. What sort of things does the PLA do?

A. We routinely tend 20 different public spaces in the Peninsula (list enclosed). Every Friday morning (9am-10:30), the PLA Mean Green Team, takes care of one of the listed sites. This includes taking care of plantings (weeding, trimming, fertilizing), picking up litter and cleaning up graffiti. We fundraise to transform medians with ugly black asphalt into beautiful areas with plantings and color. We pay artists to paint utility boxes to deter graffiti. We send timely, informative E-news with local events and activities We hold yearly Town Hall Forums to inform and educate residents about topics relevant to the Peninsula. We support the free summer concerts at the Point Loma Park. We sponsor the “Welcome Home Submarine” banner program to welcome our submarines after their long deployments.

Q. What if I cannot/DO not like to garden? How can I contribute?

A. Most of our members do not actively participate in our work. Your membership dues and donations are very important and help pay for all our projects and supplies.

Q. What are other areas you need volunteers?

A. We have a wide range of volunteer opportunities on our Board of Directors and Committees.

Q. Can you help me solve this particular community problem?

A. Sometimes we can. If we cannot, we can often steer you to the right community resource person.
